All workshops are at no cost to mentees and their families.

No previous filmmaking experience is required.

All equipment and materials are provided by Hey Shorty.

Free snacks and refreshments are provided at every workshop.

Youth Workshops

This program is for girls and gender-fluid youth aged 12-15 who are new to the world of filmmaking. No prior experience is necessary to join our program. It consists of a month-long program during which mentees will receive an introduction to the essentials of filmmaking. Topics covered include story development, film composition, and editing. Mentees will have the opportunity to work in groups or individually to develop and film a five-minute to ten-minute short film using readily available tools such as cellphones and iPads, which are commonly found in their everyday lives. Mentees will also gain fundamental editing skills by utilizing user-friendly and freely available editing software like iMovie or Adobe Premiere Rush to craft engaging storylines.

By the end of the program, mentees will have a completed short film they can proudly share with their families, peers, and community.

Note:

If you don’t have access to a cellphone or iPad that can record video let Hey Shorty know. Hey Shorty will provide a camera/camcorder at no cost for our mentees to use.

Advanced Program:

This program is tailored for girls and gender-fluid youth aged 15-18 who have completed our beginner’s workshop or have previous filmmaking experience. This program is intended for those aspiring to attend film school or pursue a career in the film industry.

This program covers a range of filmmaking techniques, including story development, film composition, and editing. Mentees will work collaboratively with their peers to develop and write a script they can develop and shoot, resulting in the production of a 10-15+ minute short film.

Mentees in this program are instructed in a DIY approach to filmmaking, enabling them to hone their skills at their own pace and on a budget while easily accessing essential tools at home and in their community to create a body of work.

Throughout the program, mentees will gain proficiency in the use of industry-standard tools, including various types of cinema cameras like super 8 cameras, 16mm cameras, camcorders, and DSLR cameras. They will also learn the fundamentals of operating professional filmmaking equipment, such as Zoom audio recorders and shotgun microphones. Mentees will wrap up their film projects by editing their films using Adobe Premiere Pro.

By the end of the program, mentees will have completed a short film they can share with their families, peers, and community.

If you don’t have access to a camera or cellphone that can record video let Hey Shorty know. Hey Shorty will provide a camera/camcorder at no cost for our mentees to use.

Note:

All mentees will have the opportunity to submit their work to both local and national film festivals with the assistance of Hey Shorty, further showcasing their talents and aspirations within the film industry.

Adult Workshops

This two-week intensive program is tailored exclusively for women and gender-fluid individuals aged 19 and above who aspire to enter the world of filmmaking. Our program focuses on equipping participants with the fundamental skills needed to create a five-minute short film. During these two weeks, participants will delve into the essentials of filmmaking, including:

Screenwriting Basics: Participants will receive instruction on the art of storytelling, covering the foundations of screenwriting to help them craft engaging narratives for their films.

Camera Fundamentals: Through hands-on experience with a variety of cameras and equipment, participants will gain proficiency in camera operation, exploring various shooting techniques and lighting principles.

Editing Essentials: Participants will learn the basics of video editing using industry-standard software.

By the end of this program, participants will have not only acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to produce a short film but will also have a completed project ready for submission to a range of film festivals. This finished short film will serve as a valuable addition to their filmmaking portfolios, opening doors to further opportunities in the industry.

Furthermore, participants will become part of a close-knit and supportive network of fellow filmmakers and mentors, fostering an environment that empowers them to continue their filmmaking journey.

Direct Animation

In this workshop participants will learn how to create a short film entirely without a camera. Participants will manipulate the film's surface using various camera-less filmmaking techniques; painting, drawing, scratching, and bleaching to make an original short film. The goal by the end of the workshop is for each participant to gain an understanding of direct filmmaking. By the conclusion, participants will have a fully prepared film ready for projection that can be shared online with their peers, family, and community.

Stop-Motion

In this workshop participants will learn the building block of stop-motion animation. Participants will delve into the art of filmmaking, gaining valuable insights into animation techniques and acquiring fundamental tips and tricks. This workshop explores a range of stop-motion techniques, from using printed materials and clay to incorporating various props into the participant’s short films. By the conclusion, participants will have developed and shot a stop-motion film that can be shared online with their peers, family, and community.

DIY Pinhole Cameras

In this workshop, participants will learn how to build a functional camera using everyday recycled materials found at home, such as coffee or soda cans. As part of this workshop, participants will also learn eco-friendly and sustainable film development techniques to develop their own films. Participants will also explore the innovative caffeonal development process, which uses easily accessible household items such as coffee, vitamin C powder, soda crystals, and salt to develop their own films.

During the workshop, mentees will learn how to craft a resume that showcases their skills, previous/current projects, and roles they've actively taken. This workshop will also cover resume formatting, resume dos and don’ts, and how to make your resume stand out to be able to confidently apply to jobs within their community.

Join us for an exciting and interactive Mentee Mock Interview Workshop tailored just for you! During this workshop, mentees will be provided with the essential skills needed to excel in interviews and stand out from the competition. Mentees will participate in realistic interview simulations, complete with feedback and tips for improvement. While also getting insight into common interview questions and discovering techniques for managing interview anxiety.
